Even Guns N' Roses Sang About It

Interruptions

Irritations

Inconveniences

Inexplicabilities

UGH!!!

All these try our patience and our nation is already an impatient lot! It doesn't help that we have high-speed Internet, on-demand TV, or cell phones so that we can call as soon as we feel the need. Instant gratification surrounds us. We don't like to wait for ANYTHING!! All this impatience we feel on a daily basis causes other negative feelings to emerge. You may find yourself full of anger, bitterness, and hatred. Who wants to live that way??

Developing patience is not easy, and you've got to be motivated to become more patient. You can do it, however, and you should. Patience can reduce your stress levels and improve your health and longevity, and patience can actually make you happier. Whenever you find yourself growing impatient, think about the positive effects of patience, and remember that impatience only makes things worse. Also keep in mind that being patient with others is a form of respect for them. Nobody is perfect, and if you want to be a good parent, boss, spouse, or friend, it's important to recognize this and to be patient with people. Ephesians 4:2 tells us to always be humble and gentle. Be patient and accept each other with love.

One of the best methods for building patience is having the realization that God has been, is, and will be very patient with us. In 2nd Peter 3:9-15 it starts out: "The Lord isn't slow about keeping his promises, as some people think he is. In fact, God is patient, because he wants everyone to turn from sin and no one to be lost." It then goes on to tell us that the Lord will return to earth. We will not know when, but when he does the earth and everything in it will be destroyed. While we are waiting, we should live our lives pure, spotless, and at peace. The selection end with this: "Don't forget that the Lord is patient because he wants people to be saved."

If you knew that someone was trying very hard to be patient with you, doesn't that make you want to do the same in return and then to spread it outward to others? We do have at least one person doing that for us. We should try to do the same and to spread it into other areas of our life. God sees the wicked in the world, yet he still waits for them in hopes that they will turn to him. That is a very powerful statement to me.

Overall, when you find yourself feeling impatient think, "Does this really matter? Is it worth it to get upset?" If the answer is no, then just let it go and move on with your life. Remember that God has a thousand more reason to be impatient with us, but he choices not to be, because there are bigger things to focus on and we should take that same attitude. There are bigger things that need our attention.

So go out there in our hustle bustle world and practice your patience!

And in the words of Guns N' Roses

...little patience,
need a little patience,
just a little patience,
some more patience,
need some patience,
could use some patience,
gotta have some patience,
all it takes is patience,
just a little patience is all you need ...
